Windsor

Making it ideal for children to run about and play.

Welcome to Windsor

All about the community and family.

One of the newer residencies located in Sonoma County, Windsor is family friendly and community oriented. Windsor was named by its founders because the land reminded them of the grounds of Windsor Castle (tell your kids that knights and princesses lived here hundreds of years ago!). Its suburban homes have a modern, homey feel that attract families searching for a quiet place to settle down. This community truly values the simple things in life and provides events for the whole family to enjoy.

Family-friendly Vibes

Windsor residents living in the suburban area of Sonoma County thrive there because of its family-oriented atmosphere. The 2010 State Census found that 43 percent of Windsor households had children under the age of 18 living in the home, and that number has likely increased in recent years. Windsor is perfect for bigger families looking for a fresh start and a peaceful place to live and newer families seeking a welcoming neighborhood in which to start their family. Not really into kids? No problem. Windsor is also a great place to raise a dog or two given its many parks and sidewalks that Rover will love to explore. This is the place to be!

Windsor is scattered with community parks, making it ideal for children to run about and play in the sunshine (don’t forget the sunscreen!). The Parks and Recreation Department takes pride in its parks, which are complete with safe playgrounds for kids to build character and muscle. These local parks are available for hosting big outdoor birthday parties as well. Take your dog for a walk, get your steps in while you push the stroller, or mingle with neighbors while taking in that Windsor air.

If you’re looking to add a bit of adventure to your suburban lifestyle, take a trip to the Foothill Regional Park, a 200+ acre wilderness park set in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. Parking is $7 for one-time visitors; parking is free when you sign up for a Sonoma County Regional Park membership. The Foothill Regional Park has seven miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The park is wheelchair accessible, and dogs are permitted, so long as they are kept on a leash.

Good Eats

Fresh gourmet groceries reach a new level at Oliver’s Market. In addition to groceries, Oliver’s boasts its Tavern off the Green, a family-friendly taproom and gathering place. Locals know this is the place to go.

If you’re looking for some topnotch eats for you and the kids, try out KIN on McClelland Drive. Family members of all ages are welcome at KIN, and the restaurant offers catering as well. Perfect for your family picnic in the park.

Need a break away from all the work and at-home hecticness? Sweet T’s is the place to let go of all your stresses. The restaurant and bar is low key yet upscale, with a touch of classic Hollywood combined with the humbleness of Windsor. Sip on their Southern classics and zangy cocktails! If subtle class isn’t your thing, visit the Russian River Brewery. Craft beers and pub grub—what more could you ask for?

Community-Based Events

If you hear about any event with “on the Green” tagged on the end, then it’s an absolute must-see. Visit the Windsor community website to stay updated on local events, including Thursday Live Concerts, summer Family Movies on the Green, and much more. They’re all family-friendly events, so be sure to bring the whole crew!

Windsor Town Green is chock-full of things to do with or without the family. There is plenty of shopping at the Victorian Windsor Town Green. Check out specialty jewelers, roam around the bookstore, or grab some ice cream on the go.

Sonoma County’s annual Festival of Hot Air Balloons is a spectacular event to take the family to. Usually held on the weekend, it is an early event for most festival goers, but there’s a dawn time that you can take if you’re not an early bird.

Schools

Windsor Unified School District sees to the education of future Windsor leaders. Sonoma Country Day School brings learning to life and is an excellent school to consider for your children.
